Upcoming Events at Foothill College Observatory
With the Annular Eclipse of the Sun now over, the next big celestial event
on tap here in the Bay Area is the last-in-a-lifetime Venus Transit on
Tuesday, June 5.  This will be visible from Foothill Observatory
provided the sky is clear, and PAS plans to open the observatory to the public
 for this very special event.
Transit of Venus on June 5!
The Venus Transit is indeed a rare event, and full of historical lore.
Such transits come in pairs every 120 years, with the pair spaced 8
years apart.  The first event of the current pair occurred 8 years ago
and was not visible from California; hence, this final event is truly a
once-in-a-lifetime event for Californians.  Prominent astronomers in
the past used Venus Transits as a means to measure the Astronomical
Unit, a holy grail for astronomy in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth
centuries.   Foothill Observatory will be open for public viewing of the
transit on June 5th from 3:30pm until 7:00pm (the Sun will be too low and
blocked by trees after that).
