Hi Marc,

I am somewhat confused about what I read in the Bareos 24 changelog:
In PR#1425 the options in $SUBJECT have been deprecated.
Why? I would really be interested in the reasoning for that.
They don't work well without also setting up volume retention, which
will override them.
As a result these parameters mostly add complexity to an installation
without solving the given problem properly. There are a lot of things
that can (and probably will) go wrong when using them for your retention.
You and me may be able to use these parameters to produce a proper
setup. Nevertheless, people tend to shoot themselves in the foot with
these...
I know bigger environments that rely on these settings to have the
possibility of having non default retention times per client.
I know at least one of the environments you're talking about. I can even
remember that we had a phone call discussing this and I told you, that I
cannot recommend doing it the way you implemented it. Nevertheless, that
call was towards the end of the project, so it wasn't possible to change
the setup to our best-practice anymore.
I was also on-site around three years ago to review the installation and
told them that it was fine right now, but might not work in the future.
So clients maybe just do not need very long retention times and other
clients maybe have too much data and therefore require a lower retention
time.
How would such setup be possible in the future?
The best practice solution (as we already discussed a few years ago) is
to use different pools with different volume retention settings for
different retention requirements.
Best Regards,
Andreas
