[...] Sounds good. Give it a shot and if it has more traction than IRC and such, so much the better. I'm generally in favour of software that has and will last[1] rather than what is trendy now especially for core stuff but that's purely my personal opinion. Also, these things serve different roles. Mailing lists, the meetup group, the twitter account, the facebook page and now, perhaps the slack group which might not even be competing with IRC. As long as they bring in dividends, +1.
