Even without knowing more about what you are doing, I would urge you to use an existing facility for efficient geospatial search, rather than reinventing the wheel. The ones that I know about are: * Lucene now has geospatial search, and Solr/Elasticsearch build on top of that * postgis offers geospatial search on top of the PostgreSQL database. There are more options depending on your use case.
