Hi Jessica, It's nice to see you here. I think this topic is the perfect place to talk about what me and my friends do.
We are a small non-profit called Karnataka Learning Partnership( http://klp.org.in/) with the target of better education for all children in Karnataka. We gather data from (almost) *all* the primary schools in the Karnataka state from various sources including govt provided data and the open data available out there. These data are usually unstructured. So we put efforts to clean them up, connect unrelated data(with both automated softwares and manual efforts), and derive useful information out of them. We then publish those information in two ways. 1. Reports in printable format and 2. through API. We send the printed reports back to the Member of Parliaments and other govt officials who needs these data to make better decisions and we open the API to the public. And we do *all* of this using Python. We've been doing this for years. For our webapps, we have used web.py for a long time. Now mostly using Django. All our data migrations tools, automation scripts, web apps etc are built with Python.
