Have you heard of GSoC - they will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the program and have had many Indian students participate successfully in the past years. Search and check the ideas page of the ProjectOrg's who participated in the past to get a better idea of what interests you the most - not all ideas get students, so contact the Org mentors on IRC or the list and discuss the pending ones, how you could proceed and prepare for the next year, etc.. They can guide you on your next steps. Start early and good luck!
