It is a wrapper over urllib2 and is gaining popularity. It is very easy to use and it intuitive in some sense. If all you require is using urllib like facilities, then request is helpful. But if you would like to extend it, then I am not sure of the facilities (or the pattern) it uses. On the whole, it looks like a positive thing which has caught attention.
