I had done a very tiny tryout of appengine last week - http://tastypasses.appspot.com/ its a very small script, that does nothing more than processing some get requests and uses templates... I'm yet to try out many other features like datastore, xmpp etc... I found O'Reilly's 'Using Google App Engine' much better than Apress' 'Developing with App Engine', and I recommend that for anyone to begin with... Lets see what cool apps bangpypers come up with :)
