Thanks for the analysis! If no one raises any objections, I'll make those 
changes in a day or two.

Made, tested only on my current configuration, and pushed to GitLab (for more 
severe testing!).

To be specific, I made the gpgme requirement >= 1.8.0, as that seemed to be the 
earliest version that didn't need the explicit pthread library link. I also 
replaced the use of gpgme-config with pkg-config, which seems to know how to find 
the gpgme configuration; I don't know if that's a recent enhancement of 
pkg-config, but some testing should reveal any issue.

I didn't look into the sqlite2 issue yet.
