BTW: getaddrinfo was also mentioned in config.h.in, which does not seem to have 
been in the git repository. It is required in the autotools build, so I added 
it. It's not clear to me how the autotools build has been succeeding in a fresh 
install…

That file is created by autoheader, i.e. when running autogen.sh.  IOW, it is 
/not/ necessary to add it to the repo!

Oh, OK, I'll remove it then!

I just used the autotools to build Balsa out-of-tree in a clean directory with no issues (starting with 
"path/to/Balsa/autogen.sh", followed by "make"). Interestingly, config.h was created, but 
there's no sign of config.h.in. Previously, I was testing the autotools build just using "make" in 
an existing directory, which was probably quite old and crusty1
