Good point. This drive has been in use since mid June 2025, when it replaced
an Ultium 6 drive that failed after some years of use.

This problem has occurred twice. Today was the second time. Unfortunately,
today two power cycles on the server failed to resolve the problem. Yes, I
think it is probably a hardware problem. I was fishing for hints on whether it
was more likely to be the HBA, the drive, or the cable connecting them. My
original post was sent before I had the chance to cycle power on the server.

Regards,

Ken

sometimes stall on Ultrium 7 drive

Ken,

I wonder if this could be a hardware issue with the drive. I'm guessing this
drive has been in production with bacula for some time. Please correct me if
I'm wrong.

How frequently has this issue occurred?

I am curious what the btape tests at the link below show. Please be advised
that these tests are data destructive, so perform them with a scratch tape,
preferably one not labeled by bacula (the existing label will be wiped by the
test).

The observed symptom is that reads work as expected, but writes appear to stall
indefinitely. So, for example, a backup job never makes any progress. Or an
attempt to label a tape does not complete. Reads (such as needed to mount a
tape) seem to work fine. A reboot did not seem to help. A power cycle did
make it work again.

Has anyone seen similar issues? If so, what resolved your issue.
