As the problem does extend beyond several tapes I would assume a head alignment problem. This is hardware stuff (any wrinkles on the drive case?). Your internet site shows you have all the necessary stuff at hand. LTO features servo tracks, the head is aligned automatically if it is allowed to move freely.
