Large file support is off on my client too, so ignore me. Just read the message from Bill, and that's all sounding plausible (I don't enable xattrs in the FileSet I back up, and local snapshots taken by Time Machine do add attributes to files). Many thanks to Bill for showing how additional debugging can be used too.
