it's just everything you need for the NAS conveniently pre-packaged, and comes with a web GUI.

That's the reason I would prefer plain FreeBSD: no GUI at all; just use SSH (which is what I do on NASes everytime I can avoid the GUI).

Their target hardware is a bit higher than QNAP-type devices:

And that comes to my original question: "a NAS (not as expensive as a proper server)"... :)
