If I remember well, MSF is the space between data in the the tape Bacula can 
position (e.g.) in case of restore. 
Smaller MSF means Bacula might perform slightly faster restore, being able to 
pinpoint specific data more accurately in the whole tape, but backup is slower. 
Larger MSF may render slower restores, but backup tends to be faster. 
I agree the defaults are too low, but it highly depends on the user case 
scenario.
