Beside all valuable insight provided, you might also use Ghetto VCB script 
<https://github.com/lamw/ghettoVCB>.
You can use it as a standalone script that provides virtual machines full image 
backup in a NFS mouting point for Bacula, or with Bacula bpipe, tar and ssh 
<http://bacula.us/vmware-virtual-machines-back-up-with-bacula-and-ghettovcb/>.
Free esxi backup is painful and always full, because Vmware strips its Backup 
API. The only way to make block level differential backups is using Enterprise 
Bacula Deduplication, FS dedup with Aligned Volumes or, perhaps, Enterprise 
Delta Plugin.
