The long answer is postgres "text" data type stores somewhere between 1GB and "unlimited" (the docs don't spell it out) number of characters in a given encoding. On modern systems that should be unicode so it'll store any characters. Others aren't quite so handy, they have to use "LOB" to go over whatever's their varchar limit.
