well,

it turned out be an issue in the director -- i recently migrated a web server
from centos6 to centos7 and when i did that, i resized the disk:

before:

/ mounted as logical volume
/var mounted as logical volume on a separate vmware disk

so in the director, i included

/
/var

now, after the migration, i had a singular root fs and a lv, but, i didn't
update the director.

in conclusion, in the director, if you have

/
/var
/var/www

and the are all on the same filesystem, you will backup the same data 3x.

doh!
