I would add that Windows power management can also be an issue. The "Allow the computer to turn off this device" setting on the Power Management tab of the network adapter's Properties affects how the NIC is suspended. If checked, then when Windows is entering sleep state the NIC driver will be told to put the Ethernet controller (PHY) into sleep mode. If unchecked, then Windows will halt the PCI device during sleep mode and then completely reinitialize it upon awakening. This should only be unchecked if it is certain that the NIC device and/or driver is not 802.3az compliant, or if it says it is compliant but is not due to a hardware or driver bug. When unchecked, it will most definitely break TCP connections when entering sleep mode.
Note that Windows NEVER suspends or halts the NIC due to network inactivity, but rather only when putting the system to sleep due to the system idle timer expiring or when the user manually forces sleep mode. 


The real issue is that in Bacula 5.2.x at least through 5.2.13 there is 
nothing preventing the system idle timer from expiring during a backup. 
The hooks are there in src/win32/compat/compat.cpp to prevent sleep when 
a backup job is running, but the needed SetThreadExecutionState() system 
calls are commented out. According to the comment in the source code, 
this is because the SetThreadExecutionState() system call is/was not 
implemented by the mingw cross-compiler being used to compile the win32 
binaries. Without this system call, a background thread (such as 
bacula-fd) will not prevent system sleep even though it is running and 
active. I do not know if this is true for the Bacula Systems binaries.

First, it’s usually a bad idea to have your FD running a newer version 
than your director.  That is an unsupported combination and is likely 
to cause problems.  It can be the other way around, the director can 
be newer than your FD.  I understand that 5.0.0 is the default carried 
by RHEL6, but you can use these to be more current:

Next, the recommendation is to increase your heartbeat interval.  I 
use 300.  This needs to be set on the director configuration AND the 
client configuration.  This should reduce the number of bsock errors. 
 You don’t mention if you are using spooling.  If the size of your 
spool file is too big you will have more disconnects particularly if 
your director or SD are busy.
