Now, it was all my own fault. This directory alf_data appeared to be a symlink. :( I tried on another install where the directory is just the directory, and i experienced no problem. Sorry for bothering you! Off topic, I did experience slowness in the "building tree" process after giving the restore command. I moved from mysql to postgres. Again, thank you for your help.
