Brilliant, thanks for the heads-up, Melvin! FWIW, in order to get xtrabackup to work with MariaDB 5.5, I had to add a [mysqld] section to my.cnf, pointing to the correct datadir location. Mydumper 2.x seems to be a bit of a mess, it fails to compile on centos 6.4 (cmake is apparently still used? ;). I've reported a bug on launchpad.
