Batch insert might be off if configure thinks that the MySQL can't do it. What did configure print for "Batch insert enabled:"? Also, check the values of USE_BATCH_FILE_INSERT and HAVE_MYSQL_THREAD_SAFE in the src/config.h that it generated.
