-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256 i'm not using tapes, i just have my volumes stored in a directory. it's my intention to take a full backup every month on the first, with incrementals and differentials during the month like in the default configuration. with a volume use duration of 23 hours, a new volume will get created every day. so, it seemed reasonable to me to have the volume retention set to 40 days. with AutoPrune and Recycle both set to yes, this seemed like a maximum of 40 volumes would be created and used, thus limiting the amount of disk space the backups would use.
but then i started reading the other settings for the Pool resource, and confusion ensued. in there, it indicates the minimum volume retention should be twice the interval of my full backups, i.e. two months. anyone care to explain that? it seems to me with a 40 day limit, at least 2 full backups will always exist. secondly, it goes on to say that i should be using `Action On Purge = Truncate` along with a RunScript in my CatalogBackup Job to run `purge volume action=all allpools storage=File`. when i went to read up on the `purge volume` command, it seems to me that the command should really be `purge volume action=*truncate* allpools storage=File`. finally, i then went on to read about the "Recycle Oldest Volume" directive which sounds reasonable, but i'm confused as to what is really happening without this directive set to yes. is all of this really necessary? thanks here's my Pool resource currently, Pool { Name = File Pool Type = Backup Recycle = yes AutoPrune = yes Volume Retention = 40 days Maximum Volume Bytes = 100G Maximum Volumes = 100 LabelFormat = "Vol" Volume Use Duration = 23h } -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iEYEAREIAAYFAk44kh4ACgkQXhfCJNu98qD7BgCcDJuO8TfpSPXz1IasbYWesDZL VZIAoNu0JbiW+/R9Fu2xjTeROd9OTrzZ =AP63 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BlackBerry® DevCon Americas, Oct. 18-20, San Francisco, CA The must-attend event for mobile developers.
