158GB is probably a bit low. 85GB is definitely a problem. Is this something that has been getting worse over time? How old are the tapes? Does your tape drive vendor provide any drive assessment tools? Eg HP provide Library & Tape Tools. LTO is pretty smart and the heads are organised so that immediately after the media passes under the write head it passes under the read head and the data just written is read. If there is a problem reading it the data is rewritten. Obviously every time a block has to be rewritten the effective capacity of the tape is reduced. The drive assessment tools should tell you how much this is happening (margin, I think) and otherwise report the condition of the drive and the tapes. Some of our tapes are down to about 175GB capacity. Curiously it is the set of 5 tapes used on Fridays that are suffering from this problem which is strange as they are used about 5 times less than the other tapes.
