the init script is usually named /etc/init.d/bacula-dir, what linux distribution are you running? How did you install bacula? Is the bacula-dir daemon really not running after starting it? Have you checked with ps or netstat? You can always start the init script with '/bin/sh -x /etc/init.d/bacula-director start' and you will get a bit more info about what happens.
