Is there a best practise on how to backup an exchange server? I have a
number of them, and I would like to be able to back them up in backups

Equiinet -- I am currently looking into that, but I'm pretty sure that
someone has already done this, and I don't really want to reinvent the
wheel. If it hasn't, I'm sure there are a few people on here who
wouldn't mind throwing in some suggestions. So ... let open source
commence!
The plugin was funded by Equiinet.
Bacula Systems wrote it.
As far as I know (I work for Equiinet and have tested the plugin), the plugin
doesn't work.
What? Oh no! Well, not everything is perfect, and thank you for letting
me know. I guess that explains why I couldn't find any examples around
the net.
The major problem is that you cannot restore from multiple incremental backups.
See unacknowledged bacula bug number 0001647, or google mailing list archives
for something like "bacula exchange keeling".
Yes, I would agree this is a major problem! I'll look up the bug when I
get a chance.
Bacula Systems are working on a replacement plugin for their "Enterprise"
version.
Therefore, I would say that currently, the best way to backup an Exchange
server is via the usual VSS stuff. Put the path to the Program Files / Exchange
directory in your fileset.
I have an email achiever - I was hoping to state in my network
documentation that bacula backing up exchange was providing some
redundancy. But the more I think about it, I'm thinking that I should
concentrate on the data in the archiever, rather than the data in exchange.
Make sure that you test the restores before you start relying on it.
(Make sure you shut down Exchange before you restore the files).
I'm getting some info from
http://wiki.bacula.org/doku.php?id=application_specific_backups#applications
but the fact that the exchange plugin doesn't work, how come that
information hasn't made it into the wiki? (okay, rhetorical question),
if the author is on the list - it could do with an update, same goes to
myself, and also the community!
