Thanks. Tapeinfo output is on my first message (as well as other 
troubleshooting info). It says 'DataCompEnabled: yes'.

If you have the 'tapeinfo' command you can also check to see if the generic 
SCSI device has HW compression enabled (shows up as DataCompEnabled in my 
environment).
