Yeah, yer not kidding. For one thing, there's no way to use the volume shadow copy service over a cifs mount from a *nix box, so you won't be able to back up files that're open on the Windows box by a local app or one using a file remotely over smb/cifs. You also won't be able to get consistent copies of files that're written to at the time of backup.
