I'm not a bacula user... but have experimented several yrs ago with it. I'm currently using Retrospect pro but it is only good for 2 clients at most at the (close to $100 I think... I paid something like $129 a few yrs ago) non-server license level (Server licensing is much higher)
So it can't really be used in a centralized way even from windows. (Unless you pay a lot more for server licensing) I end up installing the full product on several machines and setting up and running backups from each machine but it runs from the client so not a centralized setup. And using rsync/rsnapshot to backup my linux and opensolaris hosts. I'm currently running an Opensolaris (zfs filesystem) server for backup of local lan. I'd like to get a centralized backup system running from the opensolaris server so it can be maintained in one place. I hoped maybe someone here is running bacula from opensolaris and can describe what a restore of data backed up from windows client looks like. Using retrospect its fairly involved and time consuming. At least as compared to rsync (rsnapshot) type unix tools. I'd like to get an idea of what it takes with bacula to do something like restore the `User' directory of a Windows Vista machine from a backup of that machines OS drive. I'd like a better idea if its worth the time and effort to learn enough about bacula to use it rather than Retrospect. Using Retrospect is a bit of a trial if you're not a longtime windows user. Any kind of navigation is like walking in deep mud compared cmdline navigation on unix or unix-like OS. Doing everything thru cumbersome dialog boxes is time consuming and annoying. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Enter the BlackBerry Developer Challenge This is your chance to win up to $100,000 in prizes!
