Steven, We are actually new to bacula as well. Just now starting to configure it in a test environment for laptops/desktops. As we do not use exchange here, nor do we use folder re-direction, our setup is slightly different then Kevin was talking about. Right now I have a fileset for each individual client, backing up c:\documents and settings\username. As far as solving the laptop solution, I have been playing around in the bacula installation/configuration guide on JobDefs (setting global job definitions for clients). In this case I am trying out:
Rerun Failed Levels = yes # If a user with a laptop is out during a full backup, but comes in during a scheduled incremental, it will run the full backup) Reschedule On Error = yes # If the server cannot connect to the client, it will reschedule another backup attempt Reschedule Interval = 3 hours # after the first failed attempt, it will attempt another backup 3 hours later Reschedule Times = 3 # Try 3 times and then error out. I believe that this solution will work with our laptop users, as they come and go on a daily basis (meetings and what not). This gives a max of 9 hours for them to be plugged into our network, which is usually good. If they are out of town and come back, then the next time they connect to the network during a scheduled backup, it will run the next full job. Im running this test for the next 2 weeks on 2 different departments, along with a remote department in another state, so I should have some interesting results come 14 days from now. Ideally, they don't hold any data (because the data is stored on a server), and backing up applications is problematic at best; they would usually need to be reinstalled anyway. If you have a Windows domain environment (regardless of whether it's on a Windows or Linux server), you can also store desktop settings etc. on the server. An actual Windows server (not a Linux server, though) also has a very nice interface for retrieving old files. Of course, that isn't always true; some workstations do hold important data that isn't replicated anywhere else. So your mileage may vary. -- Kevin Keane Owner The NetTech Find the Uncommon: Expert Solutions for a Network You Never Have to Think About Office: 866-642-7116 http://www.4nettech.com This e-mail and attachments, if any, may contain confidential and/or proprietary information.
