And using PITR, postgresql even allows you to fetch out the raw database 
files from underneath a running (and active with insert/updates) 
postgresql instance. This is just plain awfully cool.

we backing up pg databases in 300GB+ sizes with this.
.. but it is quite far from the orignial question :-)
