Thanks Arno.  IBM does have a dedicated driver.  I didn't think it necessary. =/

Their support for Linux is isolated to RH and Suse.  Groan.  I run Debian.  I 
did find the drivers you were referring to however.

In the directory "lin_tape_source-lin_taped" they have a file 
"lin_tape-1.19.0-1.src.rpm.bin"
I downloaded this file and ran alien on it.  Inside was a file 
"lin_tape-1.19.0.tgz" which I extracted and was left with a source file 
directory.

Going into this directory I noticed a ton of files and in the makefile it is 
laced with calls to rpmbuild.  Now I'm getting scared.  I'm afraid this is 
rapidly getting much more difficult.  I wonder if I should package this thing 
back up and get one that supports standards.  =/
