Thanks for the pointer, the dev was indeed root.root and I run as  
bacula.tape - doh !

The other problem I found was after I had done a make install (to  
install 2.2.8) the perms on the /etc/bacula dir had also been reset to  
root.root ... silly mistake.

Thanks to you and John for all your help - John thanks for the info on  
the udev stuff very helpful.

(I do feel rather silly) *blush*
