This advice obviously comes too late, but for this kind of reasons I find it
very useful to use packages built for the package handling system your
distribution uses. I don't know your environment, but that means rpms in my
case (CentOS).

Especially, if you have a public server, some security guys say it would be
better (~safer) not to have development tools installed there at all, but to 
build your binaries in a non-public machine.
