Greetings,

I recently needed to set up a new backup server, and as I usually
work with Legato Networker with customers, thought I would give
Bacula a go.

- Single server (Sun Ultra, Solaris 10)
- 2 * L280 jukeboxes (single DLT7000 drive, 8 cart' slots)

All is working and I am now backing up the server and another Sun
box; well happy - especially as it is conceptually similar to Legato,
albeit without the large license fee...

Couple of questions about Bacula; I've been through the manual etc,
but haven't found anything that touches them - might well be my
naivety with Bacula.

I would like the majority of the tapes (>8 for the sake of
argument) to be available in a 'Default' pool, for saving server
backups. This means that in essence, I would like to save data to
either jukebox, depending on where spare tapes are.

At present, I've got both autochangers defined (L280-1 and L280-2;
really imaginative names) and within the Job definition, I have
both L280's listed as Storage items.

i.e.

    bacula-dir.conf:

        JobDefs {
           Name = "DefaultJob"
           Type = Backup
           Storage = L280-1
           Storage = L280-2
           .....
        }

First question; although I added tapes to L280-2 first (the other
L280 was still running a full btape test), Bacula picked tapes from
L280-1 first to do backups to, making me think that specifying two
'Storage' items in a job isn't actually working ?

Second question; would it not be an idea to specify the 'Pool'
you wish to backup a job to rather than nominating a device, letting
Bacula find appropriate tapes & devices in the pool ? (maybe this is
just me thinking in Legato terms)

Things are working at the moment - will be interesting to see what
happens when I fill up the tapes in the first L280.

Not a production system, just running it at home for local backups
while I get used to it - which means I can play and change things
to see what difference they make!

Any pointers to other web resources I've missed are welcome...

cheers

marty
