felix,
i too have noticed a severe performance degradation due to high load
when i upgraded the backups server from 2.0.1 to 2.2.7. both sets of
rpms came from the rpms-contrib-fschwarz repository on sourceforge.net.

were your rpms based on an --enable-batch-insert option to ./configure ?

also, is there anything else that may be contributing to the severe
performance hit?

regards,
mike
