i'd guess the drive is using hardware compression. on my LTO4 (800/1600GB) i 
get:

|      11 | 000299L4   | Append    |       1 | 1,520,676,154,368 |    1,527 |   
10,368,000 |       1 |   11 |         1 | LTO4      | 2008-01-02 18:00:07 |

on an 800GB tape ...
