If I remember correctly, Kern in the 2.2.7 announce have set the possibility to 
log client with certifcates
(as we can do in PKI )

It would be suffisant to authenticate the remote client or server and with a 
strong crypto scheme between the two point
it should be secure the same way that's done in private intranet or whatever 
crypted tunnels.

The only other way could be vpn between the differents hosts or networks.
