Hi everybody,

i'm running bacula 2.0.3 on i686 centos5. There are two Sony AIT3 drives
in a qualcomm tapelibrary connected via fibre channel using qla2300 cards.

Right now i got the following error:

...
10-Okt 19:55 backup-cluster-sd: New volume "A00183" mounted on device
"Sony-1" (/dev/nst0) at 10-Okt-2007 19:55.
11-Okt 04:09 backup-cluster-sd: misc.2007-10-10_09.44.39 Error:
block.c:569 Write error at 24:10551 on device "Sony-1" (/dev/nst0).
ERR=Eingabe-/Ausgabefehler.
11-Okt 04:09 backup-cluster-sd: misc.2007-10-10_09.44.39 Error: Error
writing final EOF to tape. This Volume may not be readable.
dev.c:1688 ioctl MTWEOF error on "Sony-1" (/dev/nst0).
ERR=Eingabe-/Ausgabefehler.
11-Okt 04:09 backup-cluster-sd: End of medium on Volume "A00183"
Bytes=24,679,130,112 Blocks=382,550 at 11-Okt-2007 04:09.
11-Okt 04:10 backup-cluster-dir: Using Volume "A00184" from 'Scratch' pool.
...

where a tape usually take 100+GB of data.

The system log records the following at the same time:

...
Oct 11 04:09:53 kernel: st0: Current: sense key: Medium Error
Oct 11 04:09:53 kernel: Additional sense: Write error
Oct 11 04:09:53 kernel: Info fld=0xa8
Oct 11 04:09:53 kernel: st0: Current: sense key: Medium Error
Oct 11 04:09:53 kernel: Additional sense: Write error
...

The only reason i could guess right away for that is the tape being
broken, yet it is a brandnew one. However my question: Is there a way to
make bacula discard the whole tape and rewrite what was written to it
onto another one, again? What do other people do on such an error?

Thanks and greetings
Lars
