I already tried iostat but I don't get any information about the
throughput of the tape device.

# iostat /dev/ULTRIUM-TD4-D1 1 -k
Linux 2.6.21-2-amd64 (VU0EA003) 06.10.2007

avg-cpu: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle
           1,44 0,00 1,15 0,38 0,00 97,03

Device: tps kB_read/s kB_wrtn/s kB_read kB_wrtn

This seems not so easy on linux, I'll try this:

http://sourceware.org/systemtap/wiki/WSiostatSCSI
