It's likely got a lot more to do with your MySQL tuning... I'd recommend 
PostgreSQL for a large database if you really want to see it scale. 
Also, what is prstat, iostat and sar (if you've got it installed and 
running) saying during your poor performing backups?  Do you have local 
disk contention?  Are your database logs on separate disks from your Is 
your memory usage what you feel it should be (e.g. do you want MySQL to 
use 4GB of your system memory if it can?).

I love the Niagra platform for databases, but that doesn't instantly 
mean that out of the box it's going to blow your mind...
