OK, this was wrong permissions on /var/lib/mysql so none of clients can 
connect under regular user (and I only happen to check under root before).

Now I only need to apply patch-bacula-server-pid-gid patch to get this thing 
off the ground... sadly, I no longer believe it will ever fly.
