Just in case my wording made things confusing, I want to do the
equivalent of
tar df <my_tar_file> <backed_up_files>

I recollect that this can be done, as I think I did it a few years ago
when I was backing up to tape.  I'm backing up to files now, but I want
to test my installation.  TIA!
