Greetings! In response to a recent posting here, I changed the "Recycle = yes" that I had in my bacula-dir.conf file to "Recycle = no".
Used to, though the backup would (sometimes) overwrite an existing filename, it said that it was completely removing what was there and placing a new backup set in the file, even if the filename was recycled instead of being deleted. Here's an example: <<>> 07-Jul 01:05 barrycon-dir: Start Backup JobId 397, Job=barryconSimpleTech.2007-07-07_01.05.01 07-Jul 01:05 barrycon-dir: Recycled volume "Full-2006-6-3-1-5-3" 07-Jul 01:05 barrycon-sd: Recycled volume "Full-2006-6-3-1-5-3" on device "SimpleTech" (/media/simpletech), all previous data lost. <<>> This was okay. Here are the same portion of the emails from this morning's backup: <<>> 11-Aug 01:05 barrycon-dir: Start Backup JobId 417, Job=barryconSimpleTech.2007-08-11_01.05.01 11-Aug 01:05 barrycon-sd: Volume "Diff-2006-7-15-1-5-5" previously written, moving to end of data. <<>> I don't want an old backup file to still have the data it had before. Therefore, I believe I will change my "Recycle" back to yes, because this way, even if it did sometimes reuse an old file, instead of creating a new one, each file had only the backup information from the most recent backup. I did, and am still working on a script to "fine tune" it, also in response to the recent message I posted here, just have a script remove files older than about six months. (I'm still "fine tuning" how long to hold the backup data, between how much space is on my USB drives, etc.) If I am missing something, and didn't do fully correctly from my recent posting, please let me know.
