hello I just had the same problem than you (i am using smeserver which is based on centos). I had to install QT4 from sources and then to copy the .pc files from the qt4 install directory to the pkg-config directory : cp /usr/local/Trolltech/Qt-4.3.0/lib/pkgconfig/*.pc /usr/lib/pkgconfig/
