I don't think that's MySQL related... rather, I suggest you either 
limit the volume size to below the maximum file size of your disk file 
system (FAT32?), or use a more reasonable file system on it (like 
ext2/2, xfs, jfs, whatever...)

Personally, I would limit the file sizes in your case - first, you 
probably already have some volumes on disk, and second, because using 
FAT, you can at least transfer the disk to about every computer around 
to access your volume files. I don't think FAT is that great, but for 
backup storage, it should be good enough.
