Hmmm.... didn't think of trying a raw select...

Ah. Thanks for that. It makes me a lot more comfortable about trusting
the restored data (no ACL's on the stuff I was restoring!)

In order to try and reduce the turnaround time on a bscan, I converted
over to mysql, which cut the bscan time down from several hours to just
under an hour. It also worked. I suspect that in the first place I
should have completely deleted the volume from the database, and then a
bscan would probably have worked under sqlite3 too.

Oh well... if nothing else I'm a little wiser for the experience!
