Oh, absolutely, this can be debated past the end of time.  Different goals
for different folks.

Personally, I'd rather do RAID 1/0 groups in hardware over software.  But
I can understand when & why you'd prefer software.  RAID5?  With the right
controllers, unless you're saturating your disk connections, you should be
able to get close to RAID 1/0 speeds.  It's a question of where do you
spend your money.

And before anybody says anything about this, I've been doing this for
close to 20 years.  I shocked an Oracle DBA several years ago when he was
adamant that his databases absolutely, positively would not perform well
on RAID5 volumes.  I pointed out that his high performance database had
been running on a RAID5 (hardware implementation over Fibre Channel)
volume set for 6 months.

My point is that there are always alternatives.  Speed costs, how fast do
you want to go.
