So far, so good. But since you're backing up to plain old files, you 
cannot create a new file on the disk without creating a new volume. In 
other words, unless you use an external tool to slice the file up, each 
file on the SD's disk is one volume. (Now, a job can have multiple 
volumes, and vice-versa...)

"Maximum Volume Bytes" means it has to end the volume and start a new 
volume after 4gb. 

Is there any reason it would not start a new volume, or re-use/recycle 
an existing volume? Is automatic labeling turned on?

Myself, I have three pools (full, diff, incr) and each is set to create 
volumes (e.g. "FULL0005") as necessary with a Maximum Volume Bytes of 
2gb, and it works pretty well, so I think what you want is certainly 
possible.
