I can only get you pointed in the direction you need to take -- hopefully one with more tape savvy will chime in here.
From my limited experience with tapes, there are a couple utilities that need to be run to make sure bacula can talk to the drive. One utility will write to the tape checking along the way for various commands. btape I believe (I've only played with this and it's been a few months now.) There are also the mtx-changer scripts and some modifications that will alert you to tape changes (see notes in the source code for more details.) Again, this is to point you in the right direction - not intending to be vague - it's just been a while. There are a number of people on the list who can give very precise information.
